چکیده

Head-out water immersion (HOI) results in a redistribution of blood volume with a relative central hypervolemia, which is the cause of increased secretion of the atrionatriuretic factor (ANF). This study was conducted to examine the role of different bath temperatures for the stimulation of ANF secretion. Twelve healthy subjects were immersed in 4 water baths (24, 28. 35 and 39 *C) for 40 min in a randomized fashion. Plasma ANF was determined by radioimmunoassay following extraction. The baths led to a significant increase in plasma ANF. Maximal increments were the highest in hot baths. This data suggests that heat induced changes in circulation may modulate the secretion of ANF. The importance of heart rate is being discussed.

Paolo Coruzzi Paolo Coruzzi, MD, Institute of Semeiotica Medica, University of Parma, I-43100 Parma (Italy) Dear Sir, Six years ago, natriuretic granules were detected in the atria of the heart [1], and thus a new chapter in physiology (cardiac, renal and endocrine) has begun to be written. Head-out water immersion or expansi...

Relationship of increased plasma atrial natriuretic factor and renal sodium handling during immersion-induced central hypervolemia in normal humans.

Although maneuvers augmenting atrial volume and/or stretch also augment plasma levels of atrial natriuretic factor (ANF), the role of ANF in modulating renal sodium and water handling has not been defined. Water immersion to the neck (NI) was employed to assess the ANF response to acute volume expansion in 13 seated sodium-replete normal subjects. ANF increased promptly and markedly from 7.8 +/...

Atrial natriuretic factor release by angiotensin II in the conscious rat.

Since it was previously reported that atrial natriuretic factor (ANF) may exert an inhibitory effect on renin release, the existence of an Angiotensin II (Ang II)-ANF feedback mechanism was investigated. Male rats were infused intraperitoneally for 7 days with either saline, a nonpressor dose of Ang II (200 ng/kg/min), or a pressor dose (800 ng/kg/min) of Ang II. Systolic blood pressure, plasma...

Effects of volume change on circulating immunoreactive atrial natriuretic factor in rats.

The mammalian atrial hormone atrial natriuretic factor (ANF) has been shown to have potent natriuretic and diuretic actions as well as vasodilator effects when released into the circulation. To investigate how the levels of the circulating form of this peptide change with alteration of intravascular fluid volume, we measured immunoreactive ANF in the plasma of Wistar rats after acute saline loa...
